Black Bream (Acanthopagrus butcheri) are an important commercial and recreational fish species in the Vasse Wonnerup wetlands and have been severely impacted by major fish kills.  As a long-lived fish species that spend their entire life in the wetlands the Black Bream are an important indicator of fish health.

Two indicators were developed for Black Bream, one measuring recruitment of juvenile fish and the other body condition of adult fish.  Fish monitoring undertaken in spring and summer in the Wonnerup Inlet and Deadwater is used to calculate the indicators following methodology developed by Murdoch University.

Key Findings 2024

  • A total of 1,272 Black Bream was recorded throughout Wonnerup Inlet and the Deadwater in November 2024 and January 2025.
  • Catches of juvenile Black Bream in seine nets in November 2024 were around three times higher than those in the preceding year, and the second largest recorded in a November.
  • Recruitment in 2024 was rated as A (Excellent). This was only the third time in 13 years that an Excellent grade has been achieved. It was a substantial increase from the D (Poor) grade in 2023. This mirrors the pattern from 2021 (Poor) to 2022 (Excellent) and shows how variable recruitment can be from year to year.
  • Despite several adult Black Bream being caught in the seine nets in January, the number of adults measured across all sampling was insufficient to produce a reliable body condition index.
