The Vasse–Wonnerup Wetlands are among the most nutrient enriched systems in Western Australia. During winter, rainfall delivers freshwater and nutrients from the surrounding catchment into the wetlands. These nutrients support aquatic plants and a productive ecosystem but can also drive the growth of macroalgae and phytoplankton during the warmer months. In summer, as these blooms break down, oxygen levels in the water can decline, leading to poor water quality and occasional fish kills.

The Water Quality Index tracks changes in nutrient concentrations and phytoplankton biomass within the wetlands. It has been developed specifically for the Vasse Wonnerup wetlands as it is a unique system with significant modifications including surge barriers on both estuaries and a seasonally opened sand bar at its mouth. The index uses monthly water quality data to assess conditions across the wet (May–October) and dry (November–April) seasons. It draws on the concentrations of key indicators, dissolved inorganic nitrogen, phosphate, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, and chlorophyll a.

The index has been developed by the Department of Water and Environmental Regulation, with a detailed methodology report in development, providing a consistent and straightforward basis for tracking changes in water quality over time.

Key Findings 2024

  • Overall water quality across the wetlands in 2024/25 was rated as ‘fair’.
  • Water quality in the Upper Wonnerup during the 2024 wet season was unusually poor. This was driven by an early winter phytoplankton bloom in June and July, characterised by very high picoplankton abundance, which caused ‘murky’ conditions. The bloom was flushed in early August when water levels in the Vasse reached 0.7 m AHD, allowing the sand bar to be opened.
  • Freshwater inflows to the Wonnerup estuary were the highest since 2016. These flows transported high nutrient loads into the system, further contributing to the poor water quality observed in the Upper Wonnerup.
  • The upper reaches of both the Vasse and Wonnerup estuaries dried out as is typical during the dry season. Remaining waters became highly saline, reaching up to 75 ppt, more than twice the salinity of seawater.
  • Dry season water quality was rated poor in both the Upper Vasse and Upper Wonnerup. These ratings were driven by elevated phosphate concentrations and high total nutrient levels. The cause of the elevated phosphate is currently unclear and will be investigated further.
  • In contrast, the Vasse Channel exhibited good average water quality over the dry season, with relatively low nutrient concentrations and moderate chlorophyll levels. The phytoplankton community was dominated by diatoms, which are generally associated with healthy aquatic systems and are an improvement compared with cyanobacterial (blue-green algal) blooms observed in previous years.
